Blog For Darwin is both the name of this website and an example of a type of Internet-based project often referred to as a "blog swarm" or a "blog carnival," which is when multiple bloggers post (or "blog," or "publish") about the same subject during the same time period, often in an effort to raise awareness of an issue or cause. Their posts are then featured on a specific blog designated as the blog swarm's host blog. Web-based applications exist to help the host blog administer participants' posts. (Blog For Darwin uses BlogCarnival.com.)
Blog For Darwin has been created specifically to be the host site for a blog swarm occurring February 12th-15th, 2009 in honor of the bicentenary of the birth of the English naturalist Charles Darwin (February 12th, 1809 - April 19th, 1882), one of the greatest scientists in history.
Blog for Evolution, a related blog project, will occur November 24th-27th, 2009 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.
